Distribution management software is the system a wholesale distributor runs on: it takes and prices customer orders, manages inventory and purchasing across warehouses, picks and ships, and invoices, in one database. Most mid-sized distributors run it as a distribution ERP such as Epicor Prophet 21, Infor CloudSuite Distribution, NetSuite or Business Central, and route-based distributors add field sales and delivery software on top.

Built and proven in manufacturing plants, Morsa is now onboarding its first distributors. Morsa publishes this guide. Morsa is not distribution management software and does not appear in the ranking; every vendor fact comes from the vendor’s own website, checked 24 September 2026.

Quick answer

  • Industrial, MRO or multi-branch distributor with 50 to 500 people: Epicor Prophet 21 or Infor CloudSuite Distribution. Quote only.

  • Electrical, plumbing, HVAC or PVF distributor with a busy counter: Epicor Eclipse. Quote only.

  • Microsoft 365 business that wants a published price: Business Central Essentials at $80 per user per month, paid yearly.

What is distribution management software?

Distribution management software is the system of record for a wholesale business. It holds what customers ordered, at what price, from which warehouse, and what the business owes and is owed. Buyers also call it distributor software, wholesale software or a distribution ERP (enterprise resource planning system).

The stakes are mostly inventory. US merchant wholesalers sold $801.3 billion in July 2026 and held $958.9 billion of inventory at the end of that month, an inventories-to-sales ratio of 1.20, down from 1.28 in July 2025 (US Census Bureau, 10 September 2026). A distributor carries more than a month of sales on its shelves, so the system that decides what to buy, where to stock it and what to promise also decides how much cash sits on shelves.

Consumer goods (FMCG) vendors also use “DMS” for software that links distributors with retailers, field reps and delivery drivers, with route planning and mobile ordering, as Delivrise (quote only) describes it (Delivrise). This guide covers the wholesale meaning, which is what US search results for the term show, and treats route software as one type.

What does distribution management software do?

A distribution management system covers eight jobs. Most distributors buy the first six in one ERP and add the last two as needed.

  • Order management. Quotes, sales orders, backorders, drop ships, returns and counter sales.

  • Pricing. Customer-specific and contract prices, price matrices, rebates and margin floors.

  • Inventory. Stock by warehouse and bin, lots and serial numbers, units of measure, kits.

  • Purchasing and replenishment. Reorder points, demand forecasts, vendor lead times, purchase orders.

  • Warehouse management. Receiving, putaway, picking, packing, cycle counts and shipping.

  • Accounting. Receivables, payables, credit limits and landed cost.

  • Customer channels. B2B ecommerce, EDI with large customers, and customer portals.

  • Field and delivery. Rep visits, van sales, routes and proof of delivery.

The payroll side of this is large too. US wholesale trade employed 6,072.1 thousand people in August 2026, at average hourly earnings of $39.95 (preliminary figures, BLS Industries at a Glance). A good system decides how much of that time goes to keying and chasing, and how much goes to customers.

Which type of distribution software do you need?

Five kinds of software sell under this label. Most distributors need the first; the rest depend on how you sell and deliver.

Type

What it runs

Examples

Distribution ERP

Orders, pricing, inventory, purchasing and accounting in one database

Prophet 21, Eclipse, Infor CloudSuite Distribution, NetSuite, Acumatica, Business Central

Warehouse management (WMS)

Bins, picking, cycle counts, shipping

WMS modules from Epicor, Acumatica and NetSuite

Route, field sales and DSD

Rep visits, van orders, routes, retail execution

SimplyDepo

Inventory apps for small wholesalers

Stock, orders and marketplace sync without a full ERP

Zoho Inventory, Odoo

Integration layer

Syncs the ERP with ecommerce, CRM, EDI and WMS

DCKAP

The integration layer matters more than it looks. DCKAP, for example, connects “Epicor P21, Eclipse, BisTrack, Sage, SAP, Distribution One, Netsuite, Dynamics 365, TrulinX, GSS, and other ERPs” to ecommerce, CRM and EDI. It prices every plan as “a flat fee” with no per-transaction charge, publishes onboarding of 7 weeks on its Launch plan to 12 to 16 weeks on Scale, and says it has “200 Distributors on the Platform” (DCKAP, DCKAP pricing). Price: quote only.

What are the best distribution management software systems in 2026?

Twelve systems, grouped from the distribution-specific ERPs to the small-business tools. We read every fact and price on the vendor’s own site on 24 September 2026, or on an Internet Archive capture where the site blocks automated reading (noted in the entry). Where no price is published, the entry says “quote only.”

1. Epicor Prophet 21

Quick overview: Epicor calls Prophet 21 “the only ERP designed by distributors for distributors,” with an “automatic forecast engine backed by machine learning” and a warehouse management system “designed specifically for distributors.”

Best for: Mid-sized industrial, MRO and specialty distributors with several branches.

Pros: Deep distribution functions, and most distributor AI and integration tools name it: Conexiom, Canals, Distro, BoltWise and DCKAP (all quote only) list Prophet 21.

Cons: An implementation project, not a subscription you switch on.

Pricing: Quote only.

Source: Epicor Prophet 21, Internet Archive capture of 2 September 2026

2. Epicor Eclipse

Quick overview: “The top ERP system designed specifically for electrical, plumbing, HVAC and PVF wholesale distributors,” in Epicor’s words. It “excels at” “front counter capabilities, work queues, job management, advanced inventory forecasting, EDI, and contract pricing.”

Best for: Electrical, plumbing, HVAC and PVF distributors with counter sales and job quoting.

Pros: Built around trade-counter and project workflows.

Cons: Narrow by design; outside those trades, Prophet 21 or Infor fit better.

Pricing: Quote only.

Source: Epicor Eclipse, Internet Archive capture of 2 August 2026

3. Infor CloudSuite Distribution

Quick overview: “A comprehensive, cloud-based ERP tailored for regional, North American-based distributors.” Its larger sibling, CloudSuite Distribution Enterprise, adds multi-site, multi-company and multi-currency operations. Infor says more than 4,000 distribution companies run on its software, in building materials, electrical, industrial, food and beverage, janitorial, and plumbing and HVAC.

Best for: Regional North American distributors that want a cloud ERP from a distribution specialist.

Pros: Two editions, so a growing distributor stays on one vendor.

Cons: Cloud-first; check the on-premise options if you need them.

Pricing: Quote only.

4. Oracle NetSuite

Quick overview: “Move goods faster and cut carrying costs with one system for finance, inventory, orders, warehouses, suppliers, and customers. NetSuite handles multi-entity ops, complex pricing, and high-volume fulfillment.”

Best for: Finance-led distributors with several entities or countries.

Pros: Strong multi-entity accounting and ecommerce in the same suite.

Cons: A general ERP, less tuned to trade counters than Eclipse or Prophet 21.

Pricing: Quote only. “Users subscribe to NetSuite for an annual fee,” made up of “core platform, optional modules, and number of users,” plus “a one-time implementation fee.”

5. Acumatica Distribution Edition

Quick overview: “Take control of inventory, purchasing, warehouse operations, and omnichannel sales.” It tracks “products by lot or serial number,” handles matrix items by size and color, and builds or breaks kits.

Best for: Distributors with many occasional users: warehouse staff, reps, managers.

Pros: “Unlimited Users. One Transparent Price.” You pay for applications and usage, not seats.

Cons: No figure published; the price depends on applications, usage and deployment.

Pricing: Quote only.

6. Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

Quick overview: Microsoft’s small and mid-sized ERP for finance, sales and operations, with Copilot included in Essentials. Premium adds service management and manufacturing.

Best for: Distributors already on Microsoft 365 that want a published price.

Pros: The clearest pricing among the full ERPs here; a large partner network.

Cons: Microsoft sends buyers to a partner “to purchase or to get an assessment, consulting services, or additional pricing,” so the partner matters as much as the product.

Pricing: Essentials $80.00 per user per month, Premium $110.00, Team Members $8.00, all paid yearly.

7. SAP Business One

Quick overview: “An affordable ERP solution for managing small and midsize companies, from accounting and financials, purchasing, inventory, sales and customer relationships (CRM) to reporting and analytics.”

Quick overview: Sage offers three routes. Sage X3 is “An agile ERP solution for wholesale distributors needing in-depth analysis and customizable options globally.” Sage 100 is for “medium-to-large manufacturing and distribution businesses.” Distribution Operations for Sage Intacct is “Ideal for small to mid-sized distributors.”

Best for: Distributors already on Sage accounting.

Pros: “over 40 years of experience delivering solutions for distributors.”

Cons: Three products; confirm which one a partner is proposing, and why.

Pricing: Quote only.

Quick overview: A distribution and manufacturing ERP with sales order management, “Quotations & Estimates,” warehouse management, lot traceability and landed cost tracking.

Best for: Distributors that also assemble, kit or manufacture.

Pros: Manufacturing and distribution in one system.

Cons: Fewer distributor AI and integration tools name it than name Prophet 21 or Eclipse.

Pricing: Quote only.

Source: SYSPRO distribution

10. Odoo

Quick overview: Open-core suite whose Standard and Custom plans “include all apps for a single fee,” including Sales, eCommerce, Inventory and Accounting.

Best for: Small distributors that want inventory, sales and ecommerce in one low-cost system.

Pros: Published prices; one app free with unlimited users.

Cons: Distribution depth depends on your partner and configuration.

Pricing: Standard US$24.90 per user per month billed yearly (a discount “valid for 12 months,” then US$31.10); Custom US$49.00 on the same first-year terms.

11. Zoho Inventory

Quick overview: Inventory and order management for small wholesalers and online sellers, with multi-warehouse stock, backorders, drop shipments and batch tracking.

Best for: Wholesalers under about 20 people.

Pros: A free plan (50 orders, 1 user, 1 location) and clear order limits.

Cons: Not a distribution ERP; you outgrow it once pricing and purchasing get complex.

Pricing: Per organization per month, billed annually: Standard $29 (500 orders a month, 3 users), Premium $79 (3,000 orders, 5 users), Plus $129 (7,500 orders, 10 users), Enterprise $249.

Best for: Route-based and direct-store-delivery distributors.

Pros: Published per-rep prices and “Live in 5 days.”

Cons: Runs the field, not the warehouse or the books; you still need an ERP or accounting system.

Pricing: Per rep per month billed annually: $69 (1 to 5 reps), $59 (6 to 15), $49 (16 to 49); $89 a rep with monthly billing; AI assistant add-on $19 per rep per month.

How much does distribution management software cost?

Only four of the twelve systems publish a price, and those prices cover the subscription. SimplyDepo is the one that states “No setup fees” and “Free onboarding”; NetSuite, by contrast, adds “a one-time implementation fee.” Here is the three-year subscription cost for 10 full users on the four, from each vendor’s page on 24 September 2026.

How it is priced

3 years, 10 users

Business Central Essentials

$80 per user per month, yearly

$28,800

Business Central Premium

$39,600

Odoo Standard

$24.90 year one, then $31.10, per user per month

Zoho Inventory Plus

$129 per organization per month, 10 users included

$4,644

SimplyDepo (10 reps)

$59 per rep per month, yearly

$21,240

The arithmetic: Business Central is 10 x $80 x 36 months; Odoo is 10 x $24.90 x 12 plus 10 x $31.10 x 24. SimplyDepo counts field reps, not office users, so it sits beside an ERP rather than replacing one.

Implementation is where budgets break. Panorama Consulting Group’s 2026 ERP Report found that “more than a quarter of organizations exceeded their project budgets, with additional technology needs cited as the leading cause” (Panorama Consulting Group, 4 March 2026). Ask for the implementation quote in writing before the second demo.

Chris Devault, Senior Manager of Client Services at Panorama, names the failure mode: organizations “often discover fatal misfits late in the project,” then turn to more technology, a wider scope and custom development. Test your three ugliest workflows in the demo, not the vendor’s script: a special-order line, a contract price change and a partial shipment. If you also make products, compare with our list of the best ERP for manufacturing.

Where does an AI agent sit next to distribution management software?

Distribution software records the business. It does not notice on its own that a vendor pushed a PO two days, that three customer orders were promised against that PO, or that a customer emailed a 40-line order at 6 a.m. Someone has to read it, key it, check it and chase it. That is where AI agents sit: on top of the ERP, reading the same records and the inbox, and writing back.

Distribution Strategy Group’s survey of 233 wholesale distribution executives found that 93% consider AI a strategic priority, while 16% have deployed it across multiple business functions (Distribution Strategy Group, 9 September 2026). Most AI vendors selling to distributors start with AI order entry and AI quoting; for the full map, read AI for distributors and the best AI agents for distributors.

Morsa is the AI that operates the factory for you, and it runs the same daily operations work for wholesale distributors, on top of the systems the business already runs; it never replaces the ERP. For a distributor, that means Morsa reads orders, chases supplier dates and keeps customer promises. Our reference customer is a manufacturer. At J4S, a 120-person glass manufacturing plant, on-time completion of operational commitments went from about 30% to about 75% in the first four weeks. Morsa went live there in two days, with no new software, no migration and no training. Anil Kohli, Production Head at J4S: “Our people don’t have to learn any new software. People just message the way they always have. Morsa coordinates all the messages in the background.” Read the J4S story.

Any system with an API, a database, an export or an email trail can be connected, and it runs in the cloud, a private cloud or fully on-premise. A pilot on one live problem comes first (how pricing works).

Bottom line

Distribution management software is your system of record for orders, prices, stock and money. Pick Eclipse for electrical, plumbing, HVAC and PVF counters; Prophet 21 or Infor CloudSuite Distribution for industrial branches; NetSuite, Sage X3 or Acumatica for multi-entity businesses; Business Central if you want a published price inside Microsoft 365; Zoho Inventory or Odoo under 20 people; and SimplyDepo for route sales. Eight of the twelve quote privately, so get the implementation price in writing. Then look at the work between the systems, where orders get keyed and supplier dates get chased by hand.

AI for Distributors: Use Cases, Limits and Where to Start

AI for distributors is software that reads the orders, RFQs, supplier emails and ERP records a wholesale distributor already handles, then does the typing, matching and chasing between them. In 2026 it works best on order entry, quoting, accounts payable and purchase order follow-up, and it is weakest wherever it would set price, credit or substitutions without a fixed rule behind it.

FAQs

Questions people ask

Questions people ask

Still have a question? A founder will answer.

01

What is the difference between distribution management software and an ERP?

For a wholesale distributor they are usually the same thing: a distribution ERP is distribution management software with accounting built in. The term also covers narrower tools, such as warehouse management systems, route and field sales apps, and inventory apps for small wholesalers, which sit beside or below the ERP.

02

What is the best distribution management software for a small business?

Under about 20 people, Zoho Inventory and Odoo are the practical starting points because both publish prices. On 24 September 2026, Zoho Inventory ran $29 to $249 per organization per month billed annually, with a free plan for 50 orders, and Odoo Standard was $24.90 per user per month billed yearly for the first year.

03

How much does distribution management software cost?

For 10 users over three years, published subscription prices run from $4,644 (Zoho Inventory Plus) to $39,600 (Business Central Premium). Eight of the twelve systems in this guide quote only, so get the implementation price in writing before you compare.

04

What does DMS mean in distribution?

In US wholesale, DMS usually means distribution management software: the ERP-style system that runs orders, inventory, purchasing and invoicing. Consumer goods (FMCG) vendors also use DMS for software that links distributors with retailers, field reps and delivery drivers, with route planning and mobile ordering.

05

Which distribution software is best for electrical and plumbing distributors?

Epicor Eclipse is built specifically for electrical, plumbing, HVAC and PVF wholesale distributors, with counter sales, job management and contract pricing. Prophet 21 and Infor CloudSuite Distribution also serve these trades. All three quote prices individually.

06

Can AI replace distribution management software?

No. AI agents read and write the ERP's records; they do not replace the system of record. They take on the work between systems: keying orders from email, drafting quotes and chasing supplier dates, while pricing, credit and inventory rules stay in the ERP.
