Epicor Prophet 21 (P21) is a distribution ERP for wholesale distributors in industrial, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, fasteners, medical supply and similar trades. It runs on Microsoft SQL Server and .NET, in Epicor’s Azure cloud or on premises. Epicor has scheduled the final on-premises P21 release, 2028.1, for May 2028; new features after that ship only in the cloud. P21 records orders, stock and purchases; Morsa, the AI operations layer, does the daily work around it, such as entering emailed orders and chasing suppliers, and writes the results back into P21.
Morsa publishes this guide. Every Epicor fact was read on epicor.com, and every third-party figure on the named site, on 21 October 2026.
This is the hub of our Prophet 21 series. For connecting P21 to other systems, read Prophet 21 integration. For courses, user groups and support plans, read Prophet 21 training and support. For costs, read Epicor pricing. If you run Eclipse, read is Epicor Eclipse going away.
What is Prophet 21?
Prophet 21 is Epicor’s ERP for wholesale distribution. Epicor calls it “the only ERP designed by distributors for distributors” [1]. It covers the full distributor cycle: quoting and order entry, pricing, inventory and replenishment, purchasing, warehouse management, financials, service and CRM [1].
The product is older than its owner. Prophet 21 was founded in 1967 in Yardley, Pennsylvania; Activant Solutions bought it in 2005, and it joined Epicor when Apax Partners merged Activant and Epicor in 2011 [8]. Epicor also owns Eclipse, a second distribution ERP that came through the same Activant deal [9].

What are the Prophet 21 modules?
Epicor groups P21 into these areas [1][2][3]:
Order management. Quotes, counter sales, phone and EDI orders, contract and matrix pricing. Orders feed straight into inventory and financials.
Inventory management. Multi-branch stock, replenishment and a forecast engine that, in Epicor’s words, uses machine learning “to select the best forecast model from dozens of possibilities”.
Purchasing. Centralized buying across warehouses, purchase orders, delivery tracking and vendor contracts.
Warehouse management (WMS). Barcoded receiving, cross-docking, put-away, picking and cycle counting. Release 2026.1 redesigned the WMS screens for touch devices.
Financials. Real-time general ledger, payables, receivables and cash.
Business intelligence. Epicor Report Studio and Epicor Grow analytics, exportable to Excel.
Service and maintenance. Service orders, technician schedules and repair work.
eCommerce and CRM. Epicor Commerce storefront and customer tracking.
Platform. SDK and DynaChange to tailor screens and rules without touching source code, plus APIs for other systems (details).
What is new in Prophet 21 2026.1?
Epicor made P21 2026.1 generally available in June 2026 [3]. The headline is more Epicor Prism, Epicor’s AI layer: business rules written in plain language, more workflow automation, and wider access to user-defined data. The release also adds scheduled task monitoring, mass data changes, vendor EFT audit tracking, commission management, a touch-friendly WMS, a move to .NET 10, new Bulk Data API capabilities, Quick Ship and ECM workflow links, and more alerts [3].
When does on-premises Prophet 21 end?
On January 6, 2026, Epicor announced the schedule of final on-premises feature releases for Kinetic, Prophet 21 and BisTrack, saying future innovation for these platforms moves “exclusively to the Epicor Cloud” [4].
Prophet 21 milestone | Date | Source |
|---|---|---|
Final on-premises release (2028.1) | Tentatively May 2028 | Epicor [4] |
Active Support for release 2028.1 ends | June 30, 2029 | Epicor [4] |
Sustaining Support begins | July 1, 2029 | Epicor [4] |
Epicor says on-premises customers “will continue to receive the support and clarity needed for long-term planning” [4]. This is an end to new features on premises, not a switch-off date. Robert Kramer of Moor Insights & Strategy put it this way to CIO: “Staying on-prem becomes a supportable maintenance decision, not a growth one” [5]. Epicor’s migration program, Ascend, targets a 90-day go-live for qualified cloud implementations [6].
Who uses Prophet 21?
Distributors that hold stock, sell from a counter and a sales desk, and buy from many suppliers. Epicor names three on its product page: Transco Supply Company, Guillevin International and Century A/C Supply [1]. ERP Research places typical P21 customers at 51 to 1,000 employees [8]. If your business makes products rather than resells them, Epicor points you to Kinetic instead.
Epicor Prophet 21 reviews: what users say
Review site | Rating (as shown 21 October 2026) | Source |
|---|---|---|
G2 | 4.0 out of 5, 206 reviews | [11] |
Capterra | 3.9 out of 5, 90 reviews | [12] |
SoftwareConnect | 3 out of 5, 14 reviews | [13] |
Reviewers praise the distribution depth (pricing, multi-warehouse, purchasing and forecasting), customizable screens and an active user community. The common complaints are cost (per-user fees and implementation), a complex interface, slow performance on some setups, and support handled by offshore teams [13]. ERP Research lists opaque pricing, thin manufacturing functions, and upgrade costs from heavy customization as cons [8]. On Reddit, one P21 user who moved to Odoo after 20 years described an upgrade path that required new middleware and hardware [14]; that is one account, not a survey.
Prophet 21 vs Kinetic vs Eclipse
Epicor sells three ERPs that buyers often confuse. They are separate products with separate code [8].

How to get a Prophet 21 demo
Epicor offers a demo request and a self-guided product tour on its P21 page [1]. Epicor partners also run demos. Bring three real documents to any demo: an emailed customer PO, a supplier’s delayed-shipment email, and a stock report. Then ask the presenter to show who turns each one into a P21 transaction, and how long it takes. That answer is where most of your cost lives.
Where the real cost lives: the work around Prophet 21
P21 is the system of record. It does not read your inbox. In a typical distributor, people still do this by hand:
Daily work | What happens today in a P21 shop | What Morsa does |
|---|---|---|
Customer orders by email, PDF or phone photo | A CSR retypes each line into P21 order entry | Reads the order, matches customer part numbers to your items, asks before guessing, and enters it in P21 |
Supplier confirmations and slips | Buyers chase by phone and email, then update PO dates | Chases from the buyer’s own mailbox, reads replies, updates the PO promise date in P21 |
“Where is my order?” | Rep looks up P21 and the carrier site, then writes back | Answers with the P21 status and carrier tracking, from the rep’s mailbox |
Shortages | Found when a pick fails | Flags the slipped PO and lists the customer orders it hits, with a proposed fix for one-tap approval |
Receiving paperwork | Packing slips keyed in, invoices matched by eye | Turns a phone photo of a slip into a P21 receipt; flags invoice price mismatches |
This is the modern way to run a P21 shop: an AI system like Morsa does the entering, chasing and matching on top of P21, reading and writing it through its APIs, while people approve. Nothing is replaced, nobody learns new software, and the work lands in the email, Teams, WhatsApp or phone channels your team already uses. When you move to P21 cloud, or to another ERP, Morsa runs across the old and new system at the same time, so open orders and supplier dates survive the cutover.
At J4S, a 120-person glass plant, on-time completion of operational commitments rose from about 30% to about 75% in four weeks across about 900 commitments [16]. At JRG Automotive, Morsa caught 5 of 8 production-stopping shortages early enough to act, saving $2 million.
Morsa starts with a pilot on one live problem, such as the emailed orders for one branch. No per-seat licences, live in days, and Morsa’s terms: “We’ll catch a shortage in your plant, or you don’t pay.”
