SSCC label generator

Enter your GS1 Company Prefix, a starting serial number and how many pallets, and this generator builds each SSCC-18 with its check digit and prints a 4 x 6 in pallet label for every one, with the GS1-128 (00) barcode at the bottom as GS1 requires. Add ship-from, ship-to and the customer PO, then download one PDF or print the run.

An SSCC is built on your own GS1 Company Prefix, which comes with GS1 membership. If you do not have one, GS1 US licenses them. This tool only draws the barcode for numbers you already own.

Enter your GS1 Company Prefix: 4 to 12 digits, from your GS1 membership.

Print at 100% or Actual size. Check the first print with the scanner that will read it before you print a run.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded. Your last settings are remembered in this browser.

What an SSCC is

The Serial Shipping Container Code identifies one logistic unit, a pallet or a carton, for its whole journey, and links it to the advance ship notice your customer receives. It is 18 digits (GS1 General Specifications 3.3.1):

PartDigitsExample
Extension digit10
GS1 Company PrefixVaries with the prefix length0614141
Serial referenceFills the rest, up to digit 17000000042
Check digit1Calculated (GS1 mod 10)

0614141 is the example prefix GS1 uses in its own documents. Use your own.

The barcode is GS1-128 with Application Identifier (00): start, FNC1, 00 and the 18 digits. GS1 says an SSCC must not be reused within one year of shipment (2.2.1).

What the label follows

  • Size. 4 x 6 in, one of the sizes GS1 lists for logistic labels (6.6.4.5).

  • Barcode at the bottom. The GS1-128 carrying the SSCC goes in the lowest part of the label, bars upright (6.6.4.1.1).

  • Barcode size. X of 0.495 mm and bars 31.75 mm tall, GS1’s minimum and target for logistic units (symbol specification table 5).

  • Text. A data title, SSCC, with the number in large type, the customer PO under the title ORDER NUMBER, and ship-from and ship-to text at the top in at least 3 mm type (6.6.4.2 to 6.6.4.4).

How to print a run of pallet labels

  1. Enter the extension digit (0 unless you have a reason), your GS1 Company Prefix and the first serial reference.

  2. Set how many labels, up to 500 per run. Each label’s serial counts up by one, and its check digit is calculated.

  3. Add ship-from, ship-to and the PO. Each label also shows “n of N”.

  4. Download the PDF or print. On a thermal printer choose the 4 x 6 in paper size at 100%.

  5. Write down the last serial you used, so the next run starts after it.

Who needs SSCC labels

The SSCC links the physical pallet to the EDI messages about it, such as an advance ship notice (GS1 2.2.1), so customers that receive against those messages ask for one on each pallet. Many add their own rules for label position or extra barcodes such as ship-to postal code (420) or PO (400); check your customer’s requirements. This generator makes the standard GS1 label.

Common questions

Do I need GS1 membership?

Yes. An SSCC is built on your own GS1 Company Prefix, so that it is unique worldwide. GS1 US licenses prefixes. This tool is not affiliated with GS1 and does not issue them.

Can I check an SSCC someone sent me?

Use the check digit calculator and choose SSCC-18.

WHERE MORSA FITS

Scanned it in. Is it all there?

A barcode tells receiving what arrived. Morsa matches it against the purchase order line, flags what is short or wrong, and chases the supplier for the rest, in email, Teams, WhatsApp or whatever you already run on.
