Barcode generator

Pick the barcode type, type the number or text, and this generator draws a scannable barcode at the size GS1 or ISO specifies, with the check digit worked out for you. Download it as SVG, PNG or PDF, or print a test sheet with a ruler to prove the printer kept it at true size. It makes UPC-A, EAN-13, Code 128, GS1-128, SSCC pallet labels, ITF-14, Code 39 and QR codes, and nothing you type leaves your browser.

Which barcode do you need?

Retail products carry a UPC-A or EAN-13 with a number licensed from GS1. Cases and pallets moving through a warehouse carry ITF-14 or GS1-128. Anything internal, such as a bin, a work order or a PO number, can be Code 128, which takes any keyboard text.

How to make a barcode

  1. Choose the barcode type. The page you are on picks a sensible one, and you can switch at any time.

  2. Type the number or text. For UPC, EAN, ITF-14 and SSCC, leave the check digit off and the generator adds it, or type it and the generator checks it.

  3. Set the size. UPC and EAN sizes are a magnification from 80% to 200%; the others take an X-dimension (the width of the narrowest bar) and a bar height. Reset puts back the GS1 or ISO target.

  4. Choose your printer. For a 203, 300 or 600 dpi printer the X-dimension is rounded to whole printer dots, so every bar prints the same width.

  5. Download SVG for artwork, PNG for documents and label software, or PDF for printing. Print the test sheet first and scan it.

What the generator checks for you

  • Check digits. GTINs, SSCCs and GLNs end in a check digit calculated with GS1’s mod 10 rule (General Specifications 7.9.1). A wrong digit is reported with the right one.

  • Quiet zones. The blank margins scanners need are part of every download: 9X each side for UPC-A, 11X and 7X for EAN-13 (5.2.3.4), and 10X for ITF-14, GS1-128 and Code 39.

  • Sizes. Warnings appear when the X-dimension or bar height falls outside GS1’s symbol specification tables (5.12.3) or the ISO recommendation for Code 39.

  • GS1-128 rules. FNC1 goes first, a separator follows any variable-length field that is not last, and fixed-length fields are moved to the front (7.8.6). Data is capped at 48 characters and 165.10 mm wide (5.4.4.3).

QR codes

The QR code tab makes a QR Code from any text or link, up to 213 bytes, at error correction level M (ISO/IEC 18004). Pick the printed size and download an SVG or PDF at that exact size, or a 300 dpi PNG. Each module is a whole number of pixels in the PNG, so the code stays sharp. Every version this generator can make was read back with an independent decoder. QR Code is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE INCORPORATED.

Downloads that keep their size

The SVG is written in millimetres and the PDF page is exactly the size of the barcode, quiet zones included, so both place at true size. The PNG is drawn at the printer resolution you chose, with its dpi stored in the file so label software imports it at the right size. Scaling any of them after download changes the X-dimension; resize in the generator instead.

Where barcode numbers come from

A UPC or EAN number for products you sell in stores or on Amazon has to be licensed from GS1 US or the GS1 office in your country. GS1 US says Amazon validates barcodes against the GS1 database. This generator draws the barcode for a number you already own. It does not sell or issue numbers, and it is not affiliated with GS1. Code 128 and Code 39 need no registration: use any value your own systems understand.

Common questions

Is this barcode generator free?

Yes, including for commercial use, with no sign-up and no watermark. Everything runs in your browser.

Will my scanner read it?

Every linear symbology here was checked by decoding thousands of generated barcodes with an independent open-source decoder, and the QR codes by reading back every version and mask the generator makes. Your printer and label stock still matter: print the test sheet and scan it before you print a run.

Can I make many barcodes at once?

The SSCC page prints a numbered run of up to 500 pallet labels. For rack and bin locations, the rack label generator prints whole sheets from a location pattern.

WHERE MORSA FITS

Scanned it in. Is it all there?

A barcode tells receiving what arrived. Morsa matches it against the purchase order line, flags what is short or wrong, and chases the supplier for the rest, in email, Teams, WhatsApp or whatever you already run on.
