ITF-14 barcode generator

Enter the 13 digits of a GTIN-14, or build one from the UPC of the item inside plus a packaging indicator, and this generator draws an ITF-14 case barcode with its check digit, quiet zones and bearer bars. The default size follows GS1 for cases scanned in distribution: X of 0.495 mm and bars 31.75 mm tall. Download SVG, PNG or PDF.

Make a case code from a UPC or EAN

A case of one product gets its own GTIN-14: a packaging indicator digit, the item's GTIN without its check digit, and a new check digit. GS1 uses indicators 1 to 8 for packaging levels.

Retailers and Amazon check product numbers against GS1's database, so a UPC or EAN for products you sell must be licensed from GS1 US (or the GS1 office in your country). This tool only draws the barcode for a number you already own; it does not issue numbers.

What goes in an ITF-14

An ITF-14 always carries exactly 14 digits: a GTIN-14 that identifies a case or carton (GS1 General Specifications 5.3.1). For a case of one product, the GTIN-14 is a packaging indicator digit from 1 to 8, the first 12 digits of the item’s GTIN-13 (a UPC with a 0 in front), and a new check digit.

Symbol specification table 2 (5.12.3.2) and ITF-14 dimensions (5.3.2.2 and 5.3.2.4).

Width follows W = (P(4N + 6) + N + 6)X + 2Q. GS1’s own example, seven pairs at 2.5:1 with X = 1.016 mm, is 142.75 mm wide; the same barcode at 0.495 mm is 69.55 mm. Both match this generator.

Bearer bars

The thick bars above and below the symbol stop a skewed scan line from reading part of the barcode as a shorter number, and on printing plates they even out the pressure. GS1 makes them mandatory where technically feasible. Choose top and bottom for labels and digital printing, or the full 4.83 mm frame when the case is printed from a plate.

How to make one

  1. Enter the 13 digits of the GTIN-14, or open “Make a case code from a UPC or EAN”, type the item’s UPC and pick the indicator.

  2. Keep X at 0.495 mm for printed labels. For printing straight onto corrugated board, ask your box printer which X it can hold; GS1 allows up to 1.016 mm.

  3. Pick the bearer bar style, download, and print a test sheet.

Common questions

ITF-14 or GS1-128 on a case?

ITF-14 holds only the GTIN-14 and prints well on rough corrugated board. If you also need a lot number, a date or a weight, use GS1-128 with those Application Identifiers.

Can the case use the same number as the item?

No. A different packaging level is a different trade item and needs its own GTIN, which is why the indicator digit changes.

Where does the GTIN come from?

It is built from a number your company licensed from GS1 US. This tool draws the barcode; it does not issue numbers.

WHERE MORSA FITS

Scanned it in. Is it all there?

A barcode tells receiving what arrived. Morsa matches it against the purchase order line, flags what is short or wrong, and chases the supplier for the rest, in email, Teams, WhatsApp or whatever you already run on.
