10, 15, 17, 20 and 26 ft trucks from U-Haul’s truck pages; 12, 16 and 22 ft from Penske; 24 ft from Budget’s spec sheet dated July 2015, the only one we found with inside sizes for that length (Enterprise rents its 24 ft trucks with up to 10,000 lb). Capacity is the fleet’s published cubic feet. Floor area is Penske’s published figure for its 12, 16 and 22 ft trucks; for the others no fleet publishes one, so it is worked out from the inside length and width and marked so. Penske’s published 164 sq ft and 1,200 cu ft for the 22 ft truck are smaller than its maximum inside dimensions multiply out to (177 sq ft, 1,431 cu ft); we show Penske’s figures. Rental fleets say their sizes are approximate: check the truck you get.

Sprinter figures from Mercedes-Benz’s 2026 Sprinter Cargo Van pages (2500, high roof, rear-wheel drive); Transit from Ford’s 2025 specs, except the 70.2 in maximum width, which is from Ford’s 2020 sheet. Payload varies by version: check the label on your van’s door.
Before you load a box truck
Check the door, not just the box. U-Haul’s 26 ft truck is 8 ft 3 in high inside but its door opening is 6 ft 10 in.
Check the deck height and the liftgate. Penske’s 22 to 26 ft trucks have floors about 46 to 50 in off the ground, and their liftgates are rated up to 3,000 lb.
Weigh the load. Payload, not floor space, is often the limit on a box truck: a 16 ft Penske truck carries 4,300 lb.
In a van, plan for the wheel arches. A standard pallet fits between a Sprinter’s arches only one across.

Under federal rules, a straight truck needs a CDL when its gross vehicle weight rating is 26,001 lb or more, or when it carries hazardous materials that need placards, whatever its size (49 CFR 383.5). Rental 26 ft trucks are rated just under that line: U-Haul’s is 25,999 lb gross and Penske’s 22 and 26 ft trucks are up to 26,000 lb. Check the rating on the truck’s door label.
