How many pallets fit in a 53 ft trailer?
A 53 ft dry van fits 26 standard 48 x 40 in pallets loaded straight, or 30 if you turn them, single stacked. A 48 ft trailer fits 22 straight or 28 turned, a 26 ft box truck 12 by floor space (its 10,000 lb payload stops at 10 if each pallet weighs 1,000 lb) and a 40 ft container 20. For your own load, pick the equipment, add each pallet size you are shipping and enter your payload: the planner gives the count, the weight check and the linear feet.

Standard 48 x 40 in pallets. The first five columns are floor space only, worked out by the load planner below from each trailer’s inside dimensions. Turned means the 48 in side runs across the floor; in containers it adds pinwheel blocks. The last column is the weight limit: how many 1,000 lb pallets the low end of the typical payload carries. The real count is the smaller of the two, which is why the planner shows 10, not 12, for a 26 ft box truck at 1,000 lb a pallet.

Plan a load with mixed pallet sizes
Switch the planner to “Mixed sizes” and add a line for each pallet size, with its count, loaded height, weight and how high it stacks, for example 10 pallets of 48 x 40 and 8 of 48 x 48. Each size loads in its own rows, front to back in the order you list them, and the planner shows the floor plan, the floor and weight used, and how many pallets need another load.

Single stacked, worked out by this planner from the inside dimensions on each page. Straight: the 48 in side runs along the trailer. Turning adds rows with the long side across and, where the width allows, pinwheel blocks of four.
When weight, not space, is the limit
On the Interstate system, federal rules cap a truck at 80,000 lb gross, 20,000 lb on a single axle and 34,000 lb on a tandem, and the bridge formula can lower the gross. Off the Interstate, states set their own limits. That is why a 53 ft dry van’s payload is usually quoted at about 42,000 to 45,000 lb: the rest is the tractor, the trailer and fuel. The planner fills in the low end of the payload range, 42,000 lb for a 53 ft dry van; change it to what your tractor and trailer can legally carry. In Canada, the interprovincial agreement allows up to 47,000 kg gross for a tractor-semitrailer. The planner checks total weight only; it does not work out axle weights.
How the planner counts
Floor positions. It tries every mix of straight rows, turned rows and pinwheel blocks along the floor and keeps the one that fits the most pallets in the shortest length.
Stacking. Pallets stack only as high as you allow and only as many tiers as fit under the roof, or under the legal height on a flatbed.
Doors. A pallet taller than the door, or wider than the door in the way it has to go in, does not count.
Weight. The count stops at the payload you enter.
Vans. Sprinter and Transit counts use the width between the wheel arches, because a pallet sits on the floor between them.
Share and print. “Copy link” saves the whole plan in a link you can send, and “Print plan” prints the result with the floor drawing.
Linear feet
Linear feet is how much of the trailer’s length a shipment takes up. Standard pallets go two across in a dry van, so each row of two takes 48 in loaded straight or 40 in turned. Enter the pallets you are shipping and the planner gives the linear feet of floor they need. LTL carriers set their own rules for shipments that take a lot of trailer space, so check your carrier’s rules tariff before you book a large LTL shipment.
