Shift handover software: the best tools for chasing open issues across shifts, with prices

To chase open issues across shifts, a factory needs a tool that gives each issue an owner and a due date, follows up with whoever it is waiting on, and closes it only on evidence such as a received part or a closed work order. Shift handover software records the issue and carries it forward; the chasing is the harder part. Our pick for discrete plants where issues still fall between shifts is Morsa, which publishes this guide and does that chasing itself. Plants that need a regulated electronic shift log should look at Octave Tempo (formerly j5), Opralog or Shiftconnector (quote only), and maintenance-led teams at MaintainX (free, then $20 to $65 a user a month) or UpKeep ($24 to $55).

Quick answer

  • Discrete plant where open issues get lost between shifts: Morsa, working across the ERP, MES, Teams, WhatsApp, email and phone the plant already uses.

  • Refinery, utility, chemical or power plant that needs a controlled electronic shift log and operator rounds: Octave Tempo Shift Handover (formerly Hexagon j5) or Infotechnics Opralog. Quote only.

  • Chemical, pharma or food plant that wants a “read and understood” sign-off on every entry: Eschbach Shiftconnector. Quote only.

  • Asset-heavy plant on SAP or IBM Maximo that wants carried-over issues to become work orders: Innovapptive. Quote only.

  • Small industrial team that wants a dedicated handover log with a public price: Turnover, from $75 a month for five users at its founding rate.

  • Maintenance-led handover inside a CMMS: MaintainX (free plan, then $20 to $65 a user a month billed yearly) or UpKeep ($24 to $55 a user a month).

Shift handover software: what it does and who needs it

A shift handover is the moment one crew passes responsibility for the line, the machines and the open problems to the next. Shift handover software turns it into a record: the outgoing lead logs what ran, what stopped and why, what is on hold and what is still open; the incoming lead acknowledges it; and open items carry forward until closed.

Who needs it: any plant that runs more than one shift. Paper works until the plant gets busy; then the log says “all OK, see logbook”, a phrase Infotechnics, the maker of Opralog, uses to describe what a single free-text box produces [1], and the open issue that mattered is gone by morning. Paper is still common on the floor: IoT Analytics reported in December 2025 that 54% of small and medium-sized plants use pen and paper or spreadsheets in place of a manufacturing execution system [2]. Our shop floor management software guide covers the wider shop floor picture; this guide stays on the handover.

Digital shift handover

Digital shift handover means the handover lives in software instead of on paper: structured sections for safety, production, quality and maintenance, entries made during the shift rather than at the end, open items that roll forward automatically, and an acknowledgment from the incoming lead. The tools below differ mainly in where the data comes from (typed, or pulled from the machines and the ERP) and what happens to an open item afterwards.

Shift log software and electronic shift logs

Shift log software, also called an electronic shift log or operations logbook, is the regulated cousin of the handover: control rooms in oil and gas, power, water and chemicals record every event, reading and override with an audit trail and sign-off, often linked to the plant historian. Octave Tempo, Opralog and Shiftconnector are built for this. Choose this category when an auditor or a process safety program will read your log.

Shift report software

Shift report software produces the end-of-shift report for management: output against plan, downtime reasons, scrap, safety events and open actions. A shift handover report is the same document written for the next crew.

What good shift handover needs: a checklist

A good handover has these ten things, whatever the tool. Score each option against them.

  1. Structured sections for safety, quality, production and maintenance, not one free-text box.

  2. Entries during the shift, not a scramble at the end of it.

  3. Plan versus actual, with the reason for every stop, pulled from the machines or ERP where possible.

  4. Open items that carry forward with the time first raised.

  5. An owner and a due date on every open item, not just a note that it exists.

  6. Follow-up between shifts, so an item waiting on maintenance, a supplier or engineering gets chased.

  7. Logged acknowledgment by the incoming lead.

  8. Closure on evidence: the work order closed or the part received, not a “done” message.

  9. A searchable history, so last month’s recurring fault is findable.

  10. Fits the floor: works at the line, in channels people already use, without long training.

In the vendor pages read for this guide, most describe items 1, 2, 4, 7 and 9: structured sections, entries during the shift, carry-forward, acknowledgment and search. Owners and due dates (5) appear in several, such as Turnover and Innovapptive. Follow-up between shifts (6) and closure on evidence (8) are the least described, and they are what a plant manager means by “chase open issues across shifts.”

Shift handover software prices compared

Prices read on 2 November 2026 on each vendor’s own pricing page. Quote only means the vendor publishes no price.

The best shift handover software in 2026, ranked

Ranked by how much of the work of chasing open issues across shifts each tool takes on, then by how many plant situations it fits. On that axis Morsa is first. On a controlled electronic log for a regulated plant it is not, which is why the verdict splits by plant type. Entries 9 to 13 are general-purpose tools (CMMS, build-your-own, checklists, frontline apps) that plants use for handover.

1. Morsa

Morsa, the AI COO for operations at manufacturers and distributors (an AI agent that does daily operations work inside the ERP, email and phone your team already uses), treats the handover as the start of the work, not the end of it. It reads what the shift already produced: the ERP’s schedule and completions, the MES and machine data, and what people said in Teams, WhatsApp, email and on the phone. From that it writes the evening wrap and the morning brief: plan versus actual for each line, the reason for each stop, what was handled and what needs people. Every open issue and every promise made during the shift (“maintenance will look at Mill 2 after lunch”, “QA gets the first article by Thursday”) gets an owner and a date, and Morsa follows it through to evidence: the work order closed in the system, the part received, the first article signed off. When an issue waits on a supplier, Morsa chases the supplier from the buyer’s mailbox.

Best for: discrete plants with two or three shifts where the handover gets written but open issues still fall between shifts, and people already coordinate in chat and email.

Watch for: Morsa is not a regulated electronic shift log. If your plant needs a controlled operator logbook with operator rounds and historian-driven entries for a process safety program, use Octave Tempo, Opralog or Shiftconnector for the log, and Morsa can run the follow-up on what that log raises. There is no self-serve trial or public price list; it starts with a pilot on one live problem.

Price: a pilot on one live problem comes first. It is free when no implementation work is needed. Otherwise there is a minimal implementation cost, refunded if the pilot shows no value. After that, the fee is a share of the value created, agreed after the pilot. There are no per-seat licences. See how pricing works.

2. Octave Tempo Shift Handover (formerly Hexagon j5)

Octave states that “Tempo Shift Handover is the updated, rebranded version of j5 Shift Handover,” part of the Tempo Operations Management suite formerly sold as j5 Operations Management Solutions [13]. It records events, actions and outstanding issues in a structured workflow, with audit trails, search and integration with “historians, CMMS and other operational systems” [13]. Many lists still call it Hexagon j5.

Best for: refineries, utilities, water and other control-room operations that need a controlled shift log tied to plant data.

Price: quote only; Octave publishes no price.

3. Infotechnics Opralog

Opralog is an operations logbook and shift handover system for 24/7 process plants, with Mobilog for field entries. Its handover brings together “entries shared into the handover during the shift, open work and anything carried forward,” lets abnormal conditions be “flagged and carried forward until they’re resolved,” and can “lock and sign off where required” [3]. It reads from AVEVA PI and other historians such as Aspen IP.21 and Canary [3].

Best for: power stations, oil and gas and process plants that want the log to read from the historian.

Price: quote only. Infotechnics builds a quote from licences, configuration, integrations, training and support [3].

4. Eschbach Shiftconnector

Shiftconnector is a web-based digital shift log for process plants. Eschbach highlights clearly marked high-priority tasks, electronic signatures “for example for ‘read and understood’”, search and filters on every list, and “audit-proof storage of all data” [14].

Best for: chemical, pharmaceutical and food plants that need proof every entry was read.

Price: quote only on Eschbach’s site.

5. Innovapptive Shift Handover

Innovapptive’s connected worker platform captures shift readings and issues on mobile, flags exceptions, generates the handover report and has the incoming crew acknowledge it; “carried-over exceptions become tracked work in SAP, IBM Maximo and 50+ enterprise systems” [15]. It works offline through its RapidSync mode [15].

Best for: large asset-heavy plants on SAP or Maximo where a carried-over issue should become a work order automatically.

Price: quote only.

6. EviView

EviView combines a shift logbook and shift handover with tier boards, action tracking with escalations, shift dashboards and production tracking, and lists pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and metals plants among its industries [16].

Best for: plants that want the handover to feed tier meetings and a daily management routine.

Price: a free Basic plan; Premium has no published price [4].

7. Turnover

Turnover is a newer handover and operator logbook product for production, maintenance, engineering and technical teams. It keeps “shift notes, unfinished work, abnormal conditions, ownership, follow-up, and searchable history” in one record, and its LiveNotes carry an issue’s troubleshooting and ownership until closure [17].

Best for: small and mid-size industrial teams that want a dedicated handover log with a published price.

Watch for: the price is a founding-customer rate; Turnover states planned standard rates of $30 a user a month for Core and $20 more for its Intelligence layer [5].

Price: Founding Core is $15 a user a month with a five-seat minimum, so $75 a month for five users; the optional Intelligence add-on is $10 a user a month on every seat. There is a 30-day free trial [5].

8. Fabrico

Fabrico is a manufacturing performance platform (OEE, light MES and maintenance) that lists FMCG, electronics, automotive, aerospace, chemical and metals plants among its industries. In its own guide to handover tools, Fabrico says it “is not a dedicated shift handover or eLogbook platform” but the OEE and CMMS layer next to one: open work orders stay visible to the next shift with photos, notes and status, alongside a shift OEE snapshot [18].

Best for: plants that want OEE and open work orders next to whichever handover log they use.

Price: quote per plant: “Every Fabrico quote is built for your plant” [6].

9. MaintainX

MaintainX is a CMMS with work orders, procedures and real-time messaging, so open maintenance jobs and their notes carry from one shift to the next.

Best for: maintenance-led handover where most open items are work orders.

Watch for: production and quality items that are not work orders need another home.

Price: Basic $0 per user a month; Essential $20 per user a month billed yearly ($25 monthly); Premium $65 per user a month billed yearly ($75 monthly); Enterprise custom [7].

10. UpKeep

UpKeep is a CMMS for small and growing maintenance teams. Premium adds UpKeep Studio, custom checklists and preventive maintenance scheduling, which is where a structured shift note can live [8].

Best for: small maintenance teams getting off paper for the first time.

Price: Essential $24 per user a month and Premium $55; Professional and Enterprise by quote [8]. Our CMMS pricing guide compares the CMMS options in depth.

11. Tulip

Tulip is a no-code frontline operations platform: plants build their own apps, including a handover app, on tablets and line stations [9].

Best for: plants with an engineer who wants to build a handover exactly to their process.

Watch for: it is a platform you build on, not a packaged handover product.

Price: Essentials $100 a month per interface billed yearly and Professional $250, each with a 10-interface minimum; Enterprise by contact [9].

12. SafetyCulture (Mitti)

SafetyCulture is an inspection and checklist app; its pricing page now carries the name “Mitti (by SafetyCulture)” [10]. Handover becomes a checklist template completed at shift change, with tasks and issue reporting.

Best for: multi-site operations that want one checklist-style handover everywhere.

Price: Free for teams up to 10; Premium $24 a seat a month billed yearly or $29 monthly; Enterprise custom [10].

13. Connecteam

Connecteam is a frontline employee app with time clock, scheduling, forms and quick tasks, used by shift teams in many industries.

Best for: small operations that want handover forms in the same app as scheduling.

Price: free for life up to 10 users; the Operations Hub Basic plan is $29 a month for the first 30 users billed yearly ($35 monthly), plus $0.80 a month for each extra user [11].

What tool should a factory use to chase open issues across shifts?

The tool that chases open issues across shifts has to do three things beyond recording them: give each issue an owner and a date, follow up with whoever it is waiting on while the next shift is busy, and close it only on evidence. Here is the difference on a normal Tuesday at a 150-person machining and assembly plant running three shifts. The plant, the people and the times are illustrative.

Tuesday, with a logbook that records but does not chase:

  • 1:15 pm. On first shift, Mill 2 starts leaking coolant. Maintenance says it needs a seal that is not in stock. The lead writes “waiting on seal” in the log; no one is assigned to order it.

  • 2:00 pm. The first shift lead tells the customer’s quality engineer, by email, that the first article for a new part will be ready Thursday. That promise lives in an email only the first shift lead saw.

  • 3:00 pm. Handover. The log shows “Mill 2 down, waiting on seal.” The second shift lead acknowledges it. The log does not say who orders the seal, by when, or that a Thursday promise depends on Mill 2.

  • Wednesday. Second and third shifts run around Mill 2. The seal order goes in Wednesday afternoon, when first shift’s lead comes back and asks, and the supplier ships it for Friday.

  • Thursday. The first article is late, and the customer’s quality engineer finds out when it does not arrive.

The same Tuesday with Morsa:

  • 1:15 pm. Morsa reads the coolant leak from the shift chat and the downtime from the MES, logs Mill 2 as an open issue owned by maintenance, and asks the buyer to approve a seal order. The buyer approves it at 1:40.

  • 2:00 pm. Morsa reads the email to the customer and logs the Thursday first article as a promise with an owner and a date, linked to Mill 2.

  • 3:00 pm. The evening wrap shows plan versus actual for each line, the reason Mill 2 stopped, and the two open items with their owners. The second shift lead sees that the Thursday promise depends on Mill 2.

  • Wednesday, 7:00 am. The morning brief shows the seal ordered, the supplier’s ship date, and the risk to Thursday. Morsa has already asked the supplier to confirm the date from the buyer’s mailbox.

  • Wednesday, 4:00 pm. The seal is received; Morsa sees the receipt in the ERP and pings maintenance. Mill 2 is back by third shift. The first article ships Thursday, and Morsa closes both items on the receipt and the inspection record, not on a message saying “done”.

What stays with people: whether to run Mill 2, which job to move, what to tell the customer, and every approval above your limits. Morsa does the remembering and the chasing.

At J4S, a 120-person glass plant, Morsa went live in two days, and on-time completion of operational commitments (promises made in chat or email, each with a date) rose from about 30% to about 75% across about 900 commitments in four weeks (J4S customer story) [19].

A pilot starts on one live problem, such as the open issues from last week’s handovers. To see it on your own shifts, book a demo.

A structured paper handover first

Many plants end up with two layers: a log of record where regulation requires one, and Morsa running the follow-up on what it raises.

How to run a shift handover meeting with the free template

A shift handover meeting takes 10 to 15 minutes at the line or shift board, on paper or in software. Use our free shift handover template, which has the report fields, a checklist and a filled example:

  1. Fill the template during the shift. Add each stop, safety event and open item when it happens.

  2. Start with safety. Anything unsafe, locked out or on hold is read first, in person, at the start of the meeting.

  3. Walk plan versus actual line by line. For each line, what ran, what did not and why.

  4. Read every open item aloud with an owner and a date. An item without an owner is not handed over; it is abandoned.

  5. Have the incoming lead repeat back the top three items. Then both leads sign or acknowledge.

  6. Carry open items to the next sheet. Copy every unclosed item forward with the date it was first raised, so its age is visible.

  7. Review aged items weekly. Anything open for more than three shifts goes to the plant manager. Recurring items belong in a root cause analysis.

Software removes steps 1, 3 and 6 from people’s hands; Morsa also takes on the chasing behind step 4 between meetings.

Verdict: which shift handover software should you choose?

If your plant writes a handover every shift but open issues still fall between shifts, try Morsa first: it writes the wrap from the systems and the shift chat, gives every open item an owner and a date, and chases it to evidence, while your leads make the decisions.

If a regulator or process safety program will read your log, choose a dedicated electronic shift log: Octave Tempo or Opralog for control rooms tied to the historian, Shiftconnector for sign-off in chemical and pharma plants, Innovapptive if carried-over issues should become SAP or Maximo work orders. Small team wanting a priced dedicated log: Turnover. Maintenance owns the handover: MaintainX or UpKeep. Not ready for software: the free template, run well.

Tribal Knowledge in Manufacturing: What It Means and How to Capture It

Tribal knowledge is know-how that a few people carry in their heads but nobody has written down, so it passes from person to person by word of mouth and leaves when they do. In a plant, it is the senior setup operator who warms the spindle 10 minutes before the first piece because a cold machine cuts the bore small: a step that is on no setup sheet.

FAQs

FAQs

FAQs

Questions people ask

Questions people ask

Still have a question? A founder will answer.

01

What is shift handover?

Shift handover is the transfer of responsibility, information and open problems from the outgoing shift to the incoming one. A good handover covers safety, production against plan, quality, maintenance and every open item with its owner, and ends with the incoming lead acknowledging it.

02

What is the shift handover process?

The outgoing lead records events and open items during the shift, the two leads meet for 10 to 15 minutes at the line or shift board, they walk safety first, then each line's plan versus actual, then every open item with an owner and a date, and the incoming lead acknowledges the handover. Open items carry forward until they are closed.

03

How do you write a shift handover report?

Use fixed sections: safety and anything on hold, output against plan for each line, every stop and its reason, quality issues, maintenance work open, and open items with owners and due dates. Write it during the shift and avoid a single free-text box; Morsa's free shift handover template has the fields and a filled example.

04

What is a shift handover checklist?

A short list the leads run through at every handover so nothing is skipped: safety and lockouts, plan versus actual, stops and reasons, quality holds, maintenance open, material shortages, open items with owners, and the incoming lead's acknowledgment.

05

What is the best shift handover software?

For discrete plants where open issues get lost between shifts, Morsa, because it follows each issue through to closure across shifts. Tools that record and carry forward issues, such as Opralog, Turnover and Innovapptive, fit plants that want the log itself to be the system of record. For regulated process plants, Octave Tempo (formerly j5), Opralog or Shiftconnector. For maintenance-led handover, MaintainX or UpKeep. For a small team that wants a dedicated log with a public price, Turnover.

06

How much does shift handover software cost?

Dedicated plant handover systems such as Octave Tempo, Opralog, Shiftconnector and Innovapptive are quote only. Tools with public prices, read on 2 November 2026, range from free plans (MaintainX, SafetyCulture, Connecteam, EviView Basic) to $15 a user a month at Turnover's founding rate, $20 to $65 at MaintainX, $24 to $55 at UpKeep and $100 to $250 per interface a month at Tulip.

07

Is a CMMS a shift handover tool?

Partly. A CMMS such as MaintainX or UpKeep hands over open maintenance work well, because those items are work orders. Production, quality, safety and customer issues that are not work orders need a handover log or a system that tracks them alongside.
